November Meeting Notes
There will be no meeting in December.
Thanks to Carol Holzgrafe for facilitating this month's meeting! Everyone in attendance agreed that it was very informative. We addressed a variety of topics:
PARADISE TOWN COUNCIL: Robin Huffman talked about the recent vote by the Paradise Town Council in agreement with the Mayor's Climate Protection Agreement. She explained that there is not a detailed plan of action yet, but the vote showed support for the town to make more environmentally-friendly decisions in the future. There was a short discussion about the Chico Enterprise-Record's criticism of the Paradise Town Council's decision.
OUTDOOR BURNING: Karen announced that a small committee, headed by Mary Drew, will be working on public education on the negative aspects of outdoor burning. Several of us expressed interest in being involved with this group, and agreed that it would be best to start working on it after the holidays. Watch for updates on this. If you're interested in being on this committee, look under the comments from October's Meeting Notes for Mary Drew's phone number. Also, note that this topic will be on the agenda at the next Ad Hoc Committee meeting (see date and time below), so RDW members are encouraged to attend. Kim Yamaguchi has expressed some interest in looking at this issue. We talked about the possibility of checking with Mr. Yamaguchi about what WE can do. Also, members are encouraged to write letters to Mr. Yamaguchi supporting a ban on outdoor burning.
BUTTE COUNTY WATER: Sue Wild talked about the meeting that was held at the high school last month. She said it was more of an "announcement" type meeting rather than an "input" meeting, that it seemed like a "done deal" already. The issue is Del Oro's project to bring water up to Magalia from Oroville Lake, and the cost of that project to water customers.
BUTTE COUNTY TOURISM: Charlotte Ann Hilgeman talked about the Butte County Cultural Tourism Project. She reported on a recent conference addressing Butte County tourism which was attended by Sam Farr of Monterey and Susan Wilcox from the California Travel and Tourism Commission. We learned that birds are one of the main attractions that bring tourists to Butte County.
ROBIN HUFFMAN FOR BUTTE COUNTY SUPERVISOR CAMPAIGN: Robin is fine-tuning her platform and plans to have it finalized before Christmas. She will be starting an active campaign in January. Robin would like to have some house parties, and has applied to do three town hall meetings at the POA, in early January, late February, and April.
WALMART / GATEWAY: There was some discussion about whether WalMart is a done deal or not. Robin said that WalMart's application has been received by the town of Paradise. The application is for a Super WalMart. Robin reminded the group that the land in question is zoned for open space / agriculture, and is prezoned by Paradise to be residential, if the land is annexed by the town. Charlotte talked about her idea for the land, a convention center and cultural teaching center, an idea that she has presented repeatedly. There was a lot of interest in this idea, and encouragement for Charlotte to present it again.
MAGALIA TRAIL: Robin Huffman has been pursuing the official recognition and maintenance of the trail that runs from Magalia Depot to Paradise Lake.
ACTION ITEMS: Carol will continue to attempt to have our meetings advertised in the Paradise Post Calendar section, Renee will email everyone about our next meeting date, Karen and Sue will contact those with no email, some members will be attending the Ad Hoc and General Plan Study Session meetings, and everyone is encouraged to write to Kim Yamaguchi regarding the burning issue.

October Meeting Notes
We asked the question: "What do we want the Ridge Democratic Women to be and to do?"
Our brainstorm list was pretty full, and we found that there was a lot of agreement and consistency in the responses. There were some specific details and some more general thoughts, but over all, we generally agreed
- to advertise to let people know about our meetings
- to be an informal group
- to have rotating facilitators (volunteers, of course!)
- that we'd like to become a "known" entity in the community through our actions
After this big discussion, we added to the brainstorm list of possible actions we could take, reviewed many upcoming events and meeting dates, and spent a significant amount of time sharing ideas, information, plans, and stories.

September Meeting Notes
Gail's presentation sparked much interest and it was generally agreed that this may be an issue that we can all get behind. It was suggested that one thing that could be done in this area is perhaps man a table outside Holiday Market with information about open burning, including a "pledge" for people to use other green waste options besides open burning of leaves.
Information Sharing:
Robin Huffman shared that Kim Yamaguchi has said he will be running for reelection to the Board of Supervisors.
Important Dates:
September 1 - Paradise Area Ad Hoc Committee meeting, 10:00 am, Paradise Town Hall
October 5 - Upper Ridge Coordinating Council meeting, 1:30 pm, POA
October 25 - Water Company meeting, 7:00 pm, Paradise High School
November 3 - Robin Huffman campaign fundraiser, Paradise Senior Center (time to be announced)
Suggestions and Discussion:
- Create a committee that will look at possible ways to make the public more aware of issues about open burning. If you're interested, please email the group and you'll be contacted.
- Have house parties in our neighborhoods in support of Robin, at which Robin can come and speak.
- Consider options for meeting facilitation to keep us focused.
- In the interest of time, we agreed to table the "brainstorming" session about ways to take action. We will do this at our next meeting.
Action Items:
- Attend Ad Hoc meeting on Sept 18: as many of us as possible
- Consider a house party to support Robin's campaign: as many of us as possible
- Create a committee to address open burning issues with the public: Mary Drew will coordinate
- Write letters to the Board of Supervisors (especially Chairperson Jane Dolan) regarding concerns with open burning as it relates to air quality
- Think about all the possibilities for taking action and bring ideas to the next meeting.
Next Meeting: October 15, 7:00 pm, Paradise Pines POA Library

WOW
What I learned is that there is a substantial group of women who are organized to help win elections and promote issues. They have been organized for at least two years, have established themselves formally as a Political Action Committee (PAC), and have an organization that includes the following positions:
President
Corresponding Secretary who also does graphic work and the newsletter
Recording Secretary and Membership
Program Chairman
Treasurer
Environment
These women were introduced at the brunch Saturday which was held primarily to hear from candidates they have supported in the past, including Supervisor Maureen Kirk and Chico City Councilwoman Mary Flynn.
This group is non-partisan and is "open to all women wanting to energize their beliefs and dreams". They are a very significant action group for women in Butte County.
Sue Wild attended and handed out RDW bookmarks. We invited them to attend our meeting Monday evening to hear Gail Williams speak on air quality issues.
Geri Benedict was also there. She was the one who came up with the name WOW that the group adopted.
I think RDW should keep in touch with these women.

Meeting Notes ~ Aug. 20, 2007
Here are a few notes from the meeting. If you have anything to add, or any questions to ask, please feel free to use the 'comment' link at the end of this post.
During our Round Robin introductions, many community issues were referenced, including water, roads, growth, schools, police, safe food sources, air quality, tourism, public transportation, and fire issues, including neighborhood burning. In other words.... just about everything!
We learned a little about Butte County's General Plan, and a copy of that plan was distributed for people to look at.
Everyone got a handful of bookmarks to distribute in the community.
We had a lively discussion that touched on most of the issues noted above. I think I speak for more than myself when I say it was refreshing to be in the company of such a diverse but focused group of women, and that among us there is a great deal of excitement, desire for change, and interest in being active.
Some important dates were noted:
Aug. 23 - 26 ~ Butte County Fair
Aug. 23 & Sept. 11 ~ Paradise Town Council meeting
Aug. 21 ~ Paradise School Board meeting
Sept. 6 ~ Citizens Advisory Committee; 5-9 pm; Little Chico Creek School
Sept. 18 ~ Paradise Area Ad Hoc meeting; 10:00 am; Paradise Town Hall
Please be sure to occasionally check the calendar link (on the left side of this page, in the sidebar) to keep abreast of community meetings and other important dates. If you have something to add to the calendar, please feel free to use the link on the calendar page to send it to Louise and she'll add it to the calendar.
And we have a short list of Action Items:
Butte County Fair: Margie & Alma will be working in the Democratic Club booth; Louise will prepare a RDW poster for display.
Bookmarks: everyone is asked to distribute bookmarks in the community
Blog/Website: everyone with Internet access is encouraged to sign on to the blog; Renee will send official invitations to join the blog as a 'member' of the blog group, to everyone who gave an email address.
Louise suggested that at our next meeting we do a brainstorm session about what kinds of actions we can take. This suggestion was received enthusiastically, so let's plan on it!
Otherwise, please spread the word, participate in the blog through the comment feature or as a post writer, check the community calendar.... and....
Get Involved!
See you at the next meeting!

Virtual Minutes
****************************
June 14, 2007
We (RDW) met at Juice and Java today also. We missed you. Good meeting. We talked about the Ad Hoc meeting yesterday, & each person summarized what they thought they could bring to all of this.
Karen suggested a slogan - "Politics of the Possible". Not finalized.
We will have a rotating facilitatorship to run meetings, Renee is setting up a blog for meeting notes and communication between times, I set up a calendar of events of interest to us.
Our function, as we see it now is information gathering and coordination of dissemination (like letter writing, meeting participation, etc)
The RDW (Ridge Democratic Women)will meet the third Monday of the month, 7:00 PM, and Sue is going to see if we can use the Paradise Public Library.
The group is associated with the Democratic club, but we see ourselves as inclusive (good Democrats) and welcome anyone who is interested in being active on Ridge issues.
Each meeting will generate real "action items". This time:
1. (actually from last time) Sue checked with the Magalia POA, reported on their recycle plan. Hope to have the NRWS (new Paradise system) available there as an option by August 1.
2. Interested folks are going to request a General Plan seminar be scheduled in Magalia
3. Louise is looking at an emerging technogy to use sewage to create biofuels, eye toward presenting the idea to the right people as they consider what to do when the sewage ponds at the landfill are closed. Lisa is going to check with her sister about sewage recycling plan in Washington she has worked on.
4. Everyone should create an e-mail address list for RDW to be sure everyone gets all messages
5. Renee is going to set up the blog
6. Louise is going to set up the calendar
Robin is involved with the new Paradise Homeless Task Force. They have just begun, have selected a name - Ridge Housing Coalition.
The Ad Hoc meeting was interesting. There are 5 priority areas for the year for "Ridge" communities:
1. Community development standards (roads, water, sewage, development etc.)
2. Mutual aid agreement (fire, snow, etc)
3. Outdoor burning (they hope to eliminate now that there is a recycle service)
4. Onsite waste (landfill, recycle for Magalia, etc)
5. Upper Ridge evacuation route (Skyway is it right now, and the dam is a dangerous bottleneck)
Informative session for background. And non-partison. These are apparently basically informational in nature. Next one will be August 21, 3:00 at the Town Hall.
Blog Looks Great!
Lisa
